One Volunteer, Regional Impact: Allie Cole's Mission to Strengthen Mental Health Resources in the River Counties

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we celebrate May's Volunteer of the Month and her dedication to youth wellness.

Allie Cole spent her early twenties focusing on her family, putting her own career aspirations on hold to ensure her children had everything they needed. But as her children grew, so did a quiet, persistent calling toward mental health work. Today, Allie isn't just answering that call; she's leading the charge as May's Volunteer of the Month.

Allie's journey began at Rappahannock Community College (RCC), where she enrolled to study social work. It was there that the opportunity to serve in the Youth Mental Health Corps (YMHC)-an AmeriCorps program-caught her eye. The YMHC program proved to be the perfect bridge between service, education, and career. In addition to earning six credits toward her social work degree, she has earned the necessary training hours required to earn the Qualified Mental Health Professional Trainee credential through the Virginia Department of Counseling.

Her service as a Youth Mental Health Corps member began at the Community Services Board (CSB) of the Middle Peninsula-Northern Neck, where she initially shadowed clinicians and observed assessments. As her experience grew, Allie moved into serving on the COPE line, a vital crisis hotline connecting residents to urgent resources. The impact was immediate. Allie quickly transitioned from volunteer to employee of the Community Services Board. "One of the great things about this program is how it directly connects you to real employment opportunities," she says. "You can kick-start your career before you even have your degree."

MUSTER LIST

Try Before You Apply: The Power of a Site Visit

Thinking about getting volunteering but not sure where you fit best? We have a secret: you don't have to sign up for a shift to get started!

If you've been eyeing a local nonprofit but feel a little "commitment-shy," we encourage you to schedule a Discovery Visit. Most organizations in our River Counties network would love the opportunity to meet you, share their mission, and introduce you to the team-no strings attached.

Why book a tour first?

  • See the Impact: Get a behind-the-scenes look at how the organization actually operates.
  • Meet the Crew: Chat with current volunteers to hear what they love (and what a typical day looks like).
  • Find Your "Vibe": Every nonprofit has a unique energy. A 20-minute visit is an easy way to see if it's a place where you'll feel at home.

Whether it's a local food pantry, museum, or an animal shelter, simply reach out and ask, "I'm interested in your mission-could I schedule a quick visit to learn more about what you do?" It's the perfect, low-pressure way to find the cause that truly speaks to you before you ever log your first hour.

Volunteers serve others in a multitude of ways - though many never get the recognition they deserve. Presented by the Governor of Virginia, in partnership with Serve Virginia, the Virginia Service Foundation and the Governor's Advisory Board on Service and Volunteerism, these awards recognize and celebrate the impact of Virginia's outstanding volunteers. The deadline for nominations is June 30!
