Introduction to Board Service

The Northern Neck Wooden Boat School is becoming an independent 501(c)(3) organization and is seeking dedicated leaders to serve on its founding Board of Directors. The School blends craftsmanship, STEAM education, and maritime heritage to serve youth and adults across the Northern Neck. As demand for our programs grows, strong governance is essential to guiding our next stage of development.

Board Member Role & Responsibilities

Board Members provide governance, financial oversight, and strategic direction. Responsibilities include: upholding organizational policies, monitoring financial health, contributing to fundraising, strengthening partnerships, and supporting program development and long-term planning.

Desired Qualifications

Ideal candidates bring experience in education, maritime trades, business leadership, finance, governance, fundraising, marketing, community partnerships, or workforce development. A passion for youth development and heritage craftsmanship is essential.

Current Strategic Priorities:

  1. Formalize 501(c)(3) nonprofit governance and compliance.
  2. Expand Middle and High School STEAM programming.
  3. Develop workforce pathways with Rappahannock Community College.
  4. Launch the Annual Fund and strengthen donor support.
  5. Improve facilities, tools, and safety infrastructure.

Expectations for Board Members

Members should attend at least 75% of meetings, serve on one or more committees, contribute annually at a meaningful level, assist with fundraising, act as ambassadors, and uphold ethical and confidentiality standards.

Application or Nomination Process

  1. Submit a Statement of Interest.
  2. Participate in an introductory meeting.
  3. Governance Committee review.
  4. Formal appointment upon Board approval.
