Description

Deltaville Maritime Museum is seeking dedicated volunteers to help maintain and preserve the Explorer,  a living piece of maritime heritage. The Explorer is our full-scale replica of Captain John Smith’s shallop used during his 1608 exploration of Chesapeake Bay.  

We need assistance in the following areas:

·         Routine vessel care & maintenance

·         Monitor for signs of wear, weather damage, needed repairs.

·         Assist with minor maintenance tasks (e.g., oiling wood, checking lines, clearing debris)

·         Coordinate with museum staff for larger restoration needs.

·         Help prepare the vessel for special events or educational programs

Markets & Festival: Engage visitors & share the history and significance of the Explorer shallop.

Field Trips & Other Educational Events on site: As need arises. Volunteers are contacted via a "call to action" email they can RSVP to according to their availability.

Holiday-related Activities: Easter, Halloween

Off-Site Special Events and Appearances:  

The Explorer travels to special events, educational programs and sporadically makes other offsite appearances. We need volunteers to assist with event support and visitor engagement. On occasion, we also need assistance with transport to and from these events listed below.

·         September: Wings, Wheels & Keels (Topping)

·         November: Oyster Festival (Urbanna)

·         Other Special Events per Invitation
