Who We Are
The Northern Neck of Virginia Audubon Society’s mission is to conserve native birds and their habitats throughout the counties of the Northern Neck. Founded in 1970, the organization works to protect birds and the places they need to survive — including wetlands, forests, grasslands, and coastal areas — through science, advocacy, education, and on-the-ground conservation work.
What We Do
The Northern Neck Audubon Chapter pursues its mission through science & research, monitoring bird populations, tracking migration patterns, and identifying threatened species and habitats. It also protects and restores critical ecosystems — wetlands, forests, grasslands, and coastlines — through land acquisition, stewardship programs, and partnerships with private landowners. Audubon has made climate change a central focus, publishing research on how rising temperatures are shifting bird ranges and advocating for clean energy solutions that are also bird-safe (such as reducing bird strikes from wind turbines and even window strikes. Audubon educates by engaging the public through birdwatching programs, nature education, and projects like the Christmas Bird Count — one of the longest-running citizen science initiatives in the world — which generates valuable population data.
