Who We Are

The Middlesex County Museum & Historical Society is the oldest county museum in the state of Virginia. Our museum was formed in 1935 and since then numerous books have been written about our county history. Our county was formed in 1668, and our county records were not burned during the Civil War. Our rich archives provide a rare opportunity to support our mission to acquire by purchase, lease, gift or otherwise, records, documents, sites, buildings, and objects related to the history of Middlesex County and to preserve that material. To promote the discussion, documentation, exhibition, and publication of this material and to educate and inform citizens of the importance of this history in the development of our county, state, and nation.

What We Do

Our museum supports our local schools through educational sessions that meet SOL standards, creates exhibits, and displays in one of our four sites, writes articles about aspects of our local history and develops programming that brings our history to life. Genealogy is another area we provide resources for because of the many requests we receive from people who have traced their ancestors back to here or learn about their native roots once they move to the area. We plan one or two small fund raisers a year.
