Join us for Shelter Improvement Day as we refresh and care for the physical space that provides safety to survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual violence.

Volunteers will help beautify and maintain our shelter property so it remains a welcoming, dignified, and peaceful environment for survivors and their children.

This is a meaningful, hands-on opportunity to make an immediate impact — no direct client interaction required.

This is an outdoor, hands-on workday. Please come prepared by wearing/bringing:

Assist with the hands-on preparation for two spring fundraisers: Chocolate Peanut Butter Balls and Easter Egg Bundles. Volunteers will help create homemade chocolate peanut butter balls and stuff Easter eggs that will be sold to support survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual violence in our community.

This is a meaningful, short-term opportunity perfect for individuals, families, friend groups, or service clubs who want to give back in a tangible (and delicious!) way.

The Middlesex County Museum & Historical Society has exhibit space in four different locations that explore our indigenous population, early marine life, Free and enlsaved individuals, indentured servants, plantations, farmsteads, military battles, soldiers, along with early residents and structures. 

Researchers needed to enhance the history behind the artifacts of the Middlesex County Museum and Historical Society. Being an unburned county, our historic records and artifacts run to the 1600's, and are a wealth of information. 

Genealogy researchers are also needed to support the uncovering of some of the earliest settlers who built large plantations to small farmsteads. The history of the indentured, free and enslaved citizens is sought after too.

The Good News Pantry is a free, community food pantry located at Kilmarnock Town Hall, open 24/7 for anyone in need. Stocked with non-perishable foods and essential hygiene items, the pantry reflects the Town’s commitment to neighbors helping neighbors — no forms, no questions, just kindness.

We welcome donations of non-perishable food (like canned goods, pasta, rice, cereal, and peanut butter) as well as personal hygiene items such as soap, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, and feminine products. Items can be dropped off at Town Hall during regular business hours or placed directly in the pantry at any time.

Your in-kind donation helps us keep shelves full and hearts hopeful. Every can, box, or care item you give helps ensure that no one in our community goes without when times are tough.

Do you love cats? Need service hours? Want to make a real difference in your community?

Cat Cove, Inc. is looking for energetic and compassionate high school students to join our Cat Socialization Team. Many of our rescue cats are shy or stressed and need human interaction to help them become "adoption ready". By spending just an hour or two a week petting, playing, grooming, and talking to our feline friends, you can help them find their forever homes faster.

RSVP to join TOGA members/volunteers to assemble various types of cages built to hold live oysters in the Bay. You might not know that people garden oysters for fun, to eat, and to clean our local waters.

What is expected of float build volunteers:

TOGA float building and assembly is for anyone interested. We help volunteers, using assembly line methods, to build floats for Assoc. Members at the TOGA float sales.  The skills acquired through the volunteer float build activities will help people to build an entire float from start to finish. The work involves:

·       Measuring, cutting and bonding plastic PVC pipe.

·       Coated wire mesh cutting and bending using shears and wire benders

·       Nylon rope and bungee cord cutting and melting of the ends

·       Assembling cage subassemblies together using hog rings and hog ring plyers

·       Assembling using plastic zip ties, rope bungies and clasp hooks to cages

·       Moving and stacking subassemblies and raw materials (>25 lb.)

·       Labeling items and supporting the organization of the actual float sales

This work involves standing and walking and is primarily done outdoors.

Ghost Pots are lost or abandoned crab traps that catch and kill crabs and other marine life indefinitely. Commercial crabbers report that they lose up 20% of their pots each year. Partnering with Virginia Institute of Marine Science Center for Coastal Resources Management (VIMS-CCRM), NAPS launched a program to remove lost and abandoned pots from the waters of Northumberland County from January 1 to March 15 each year (only allowed during crabbing off-season).

Deltaville Maritime Museum is seeking dedicated volunteers to help maintain and preserve the Explorer,  a living piece of maritime heritage. The Explorer is our full-scale replica of Captain John Smith’s shallop used during his 1608 exploration of Chesapeake Bay.  

We need assistance in the following areas:

·         Routine vessel care & maintenance

·         Monitor for signs of wear, weather damage, needed repairs.

·         Assist with minor maintenance tasks (e.g., oiling wood, checking lines, clearing debris)

·         Coordinate with museum staff for larger restoration needs.

·         Help prepare the vessel for special events or educational programs

Markets & Festival: Engage visitors & share the history and significance of the Explorer shallop.

Field Trips & Other Educational Events on site: As need arises. Volunteers are contacted via a "call to action" email they can RSVP to according to their availability.

Holiday-related Activities: Easter, Halloween

Off-Site Special Events and Appearances:  

The Explorer travels to special events, educational programs and sporadically makes other offsite appearances. We need volunteers to assist with event support and visitor engagement. On occasion, we also need assistance with transport to and from these events listed below.

What you’ll do: Supervise and engage with kids during structured and free playtime. Assist in organizing and running games, crafts and educational activities. Tall ship Luna is looking for volunteer crew members for the summer 2026 season. Crew training will be starting this spring and run through the sailing season. This is a great opportunity for new sailors and youth.

Help keep our UU community connected and informed

Our Unitarian Universalist congregation is looking for a detail‑oriented, creative volunteer to help maintain and update our church website. This is a wonderful way to support the life of the congregation, strengthen communication, and ensure members and visitors alike can easily find what they need.

Self-train with IRS materials and successfully certify in tax law, including the use of electronic filing software, to provide free tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers. Review tax returns completed by other volunteer tax preparers, ensuring that every taxpayer receives top quality service and that tax returns are error-free. Some at home work may be required.

We are always in need of volunteers on game days to help in a variety of ways. Volunteer opportunities include working in the concession stand, helping at the ticket gate, helping game day operations in the stands for drawings, helping with merchandise, stocking facilities and more. Good opportunity for high school kids who need community credits.

The Board of Trustees and The Friends of Northumberland Public Library Board are both seeking new members.  The Trustees work with the Library Director to establish policies, provide advocacy and ensure the success of the library both now and in the future.  The Friends advocate as well as fundraise to provide financial support for programs outside of the library operating budget.  Both boards are fun and welcoming.

We are in need of volunteers to help run our book shoppe located at 7072 Northumberland Hwy in Heathsville.  The Book shoppe accepts used books which are scanned and put out in the store to sell or boxed up and sent to Baltimore.  Volunteers man the front desk, shelve books and greet customers.  We would love to have you join us Wednesday through Friday 10-4 and Saturdays 10-2.  Flexibility in scheduling is available.  Join our team!

NPL needs volunteers to cover staff lunches from 12-2 when a regular volunteers has to be absent.  The volunteers will greet people when they come in, help patrons check in and out items and serve the public for that two hour time period. Volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) play a vital role in protecting the health and safety of our community. As a volunteer EMT, you will respond to medical emergencies, provide critical prehospital care, and support patients during some of their most vulnerable moments.

Volunteer Firefighters are a critical part of protecting lives, property, and the overall safety of our community. No prior firefighting experience is required. Volunteer Fire and Rescue Support Personnel play a vital role in the success of emergency services by providing the operational, logistical, and administrative support that allows firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics to focus on emergency response and patient care. These volunteers contribute directly to the readiness, efficiency, and effectiveness of fire and rescue operations throughout the community.

Support roles may include equipment and supply management, apparatus and facility maintenance, administrative assistance, training and logistics support, scene rehabilitation, fundraising, public education, and community outreach. No firefighting or medical experience is required, and role-specific training is provided to ensure volunteers are prepared to safely and effectively support operations.

Volunteering as fire and rescue support personnel is a meaningful way to serve the community, develop valuable skills, and be part of a mission-driven organization dedicated to protecting lives, property, and public safety.

NCHS has a Facebook account and a WordPress website that require weekly updates. The volunteer should not only have technical experience and artistic abilities, but will need to get involved with our organization to acquire a sense of what we do and what our standards are. Virtual work would be possible eventually. 

NCHS needs someone familiar with general office duties and procedures to assist the executive secretary and learn how our office operates. Duties include answering the phone, greeting visitors, accepting payments, downloading and categorizing emails, filing documents (physical and digital), typing reports and letters, data entry and database management, and assisting staff.  Familiarity with Word and Excel is needed. There could be times when you would be needed more than one day a week.

NCHS needs a person who can organize our genealogical and historical collections. This primarily consists of books, which have been catalogued but need to be checked against our digital list and updated. We also keep an identical file index. Many of our patrons like the old-style file. We also have maps, court records, scrapbooks, loose papers, paper files, and digital files that have not been organized or catalogued. Familiarity with Word and Excel is needed.  

The NCHS museum requires a facelift and an inventory. The person who takes on this task will need to check our artifacts against our digital inventory. They will also need to organize the displays and should have experience in all aspects of creating informative, attractive displays. Familiarity with Word and Excel is required, as is the ability to photograph artifacts. This could be a task for two people. Experience with Word and Excel is needed. 

The Northern Neck Wooden Boat School is becoming an independent 501(c)(3) organization and is seeking dedicated leaders to serve on its founding Board of Directors. The School blends craftsmanship, STEAM education, and maritime heritage to serve youth and adults across the Northern Neck. As demand for our programs grows, strong governance is essential to guiding our next stage of development.

Board Members provide governance, financial oversight, and strategic direction. Responsibilities include: upholding organizational policies, monitoring financial health, contributing to fundraising, strengthening partnerships, and supporting program development and long-term planning.

Ideal candidates bring experience in education, maritime trades, business leadership, finance, governance, fundraising, marketing, community partnerships, or workforce development. A passion for youth development and heritage craftsmanship is essential.

Board Members help shape a growing educational institution, preserve maritime heritage, strengthen regional workforce development, and support hands-on learning opportunities that impact youth and adults across the Northern Neck.

Join “Team Garfield’s” by Volunteering at Garfield’s Rescue “Cat Cottage” in Weems. Laugh with us, cry with us, play with us while giving abandoned cats and kittens a 2nd chance at life through our compassionate care.

Tasks include the cleaning and sanitization of cat crates and condos, litter boxes, and 2-story living areas that prevents the spread of disease among our cat population. Launder cat beds and linens; load dishes in dishwasher and put away; administer daily medications; daily feeding and providing fresh water. Provide socialization and comfort to cats and kittens inside Cottage. Keep cleaning supplies and food supplies unpacked at delivery and food and sanitation containers and tubs filled, reporting outages. Garfield’s also has a small outdoor cat colony on site requiring daily feeding, fresh water and care. The feeder and shelters require cleaning and sanitization, and the laundering of outside beds and linens. Volunteers work in teams of two, sometimes three, as we have an upstairs, downstairs, and small outside cat area to care for.

Learn to swim provides an opportunity for second graders in the community to learn to swim. As a volunteer with the Learn to Swim Program you will assist YMCA staff and instructors within water skills and teaching for all levels of swimming. Basic knowledge of swimming skills is beneficial but not required to volunteer. As a volunteer in the water, you should be comfortable in the water as you will be working with children who may be apprehensive in and around the water. Along with a certified YMCA staff member you will work with each child on swim skills appropriate to their current swim level.

The Lancaster Community Library Board of Directors is seeking a volunteer Secretary. The Library Board meets monthly on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 5pm. NCHS needs someone who can clean up our office computer. We need to move files from our desktop computer and save them on an external drive in an organized fashion, delete duplicate and unnecessary files and programs, and organize the remaining files in suitable folders. Must demonstrate knowledge and experience in practical computer technology and programming.

If you enjoy putting things in order on a flexible schedule this is a perfect volunteer opportunity for you! The Lancaster Community Library needs volunteers to put our library books in order on the shelves. In this manner, library patrons, staff and volunteers will be able to find the books, and is an important part of the continuing education of our community. Training on the Dewey Decimal System is given, and the volunteers report to the Circulation Desk Manager.

The Bay Center has recently created a new support group in its Grief Support Series. This one is designed to address the needs of those who are preparing for the eventual loss of a loved one and is titled "Expected Loss." 

We need a volunteer who can research the available resources that may assist the group's participants deal with issues such as sudden illness, terminal diagnosis, elderly issues, hospice care, etc. Also the list should include options available for immediate and future medical needs, financial assistance, and preparation for death. 

The volunteer will then produce a resource list by January of 2026, and be willing to update it from time to time. It should include the services available, a brief description of what each provides, and the appropriate contact information. 

The Lancaster/Northumberland Habitat for Humanity has an immediate need for volunteer work that will directly assist us in land acquisition and planning.  The schedule is flexible, 24 total hours which can be spread across days.

Tasks may include identifying property ownership history; verifying property boundaries; checking deed transfers, easements, and restrictions; reviewing tax parcel maps or GIS/property maps, and pulling up any relevant documents in county courthouse/clerk’s office

The interested volunteer should be someone with experience in some or all of the following areas: real estate, paralegal work, title searches, or land use/planning; familiarity with county land record systems (or willing to learn); good attention to detail, and able to work independently; comfortable doing some in‑person work at Lancaster County offices (if needed), and/or online research.

No special experience is needed to work on the houses under construction, and all tools are provided.  Most of our building occurs on Wednesdays and Saturdays and includes tasks such as painting, deck-building, and laying floors.
