Volunteer: Lead the Volunteer Information Table at the Volunteer Welcome Booth

At our Kick-Off Market, we need volunteers to man the Volunteer Welcome Booth.

Discuss Volunteer Opportunities, register new volunteers and share your personal experiences as a volunteer with the Deltaville Maritime Museum & Holly Point Nature Park.

We encourage volunteers from all departments—Music, Special Events, Building, Landscape, Gardening, and more—to step forward.   The Volunteer Information Packet (VIP) will be available to highlight other opportunities to represent our organization on and off the grounds.

Additionally, we are reaching out to community service partners. Many students require a certain amount of recorded service in the community to fulfill specific educational requirements. If you know of such a student and have the time to invest in mentoring, this will be a wonderful way to get them started. Please step forward and help us make a difference!

Ideally, we need four volunteers to allow for effective rotation, with each person serving an hour - or longer if you're willing or able - giving volunteers more flexibility in participation as well as being able to enjoy the market!  If we have student volunteers on-site, this would also give them consistent support, especially in terms of seeing their mentors in action.

To express interest or commit, please respond through the hub, via the website, call or email the office:

Phone: 804.776.7200

Email: office@deltavillemuseum.com

Volunteer: Buildings & Grounds Beautification

We periodically need volunteers to assist with beautification and maintenance of our grounds and buildings to maintain a welcoming and attractive environment. This includes everything from scraping and painting windows and replacing deck boards to regularly raking trails and grounds to weeding, spreading mulch (and so much more!) to enhance the appearance of our outside spaces.

We need enthusiastic volunteers to help with the following activities this month!

1.  Spread mulch evenly across designated waterfront areas and tidy up the area after mulch distribution is complete.

2.  Scrape, glaze & paint window sills on Tea House and tidy up afterward.

We greatly appreciate the support of our community members who are willing to contribute their time and energy to maintain the beauty of our buildings & grounds. If anyone or any group can give a few hours here and there to accomplish these tasks, that would be greatly appreciated.

We welcome teams.

If you have any questions, please reach out to let us know your availability. You may contact us through:

WANT TO HELP CREATE A PLACE THAT CELEBRATES AND HELPS SUSTAIN ALL 3?
THEN PLEASE JOIN US AS WE GROW RIVER ROOTS DISCOVERY GARDENS INTO SOMEPLACE SPECIAL!

Do any of these describe you? ...

-- I am curious

-- I love pondering questions like 'what happened here’?'

If so, we'd love to work with you and other volunteers to uncover our garden site’s story—its natural and cultural history, and current dynamics.

DESCRIPTION

Well designed landscapes listen to what the land reveals about a place and its people. We need help collecting this ‘context research’ to inform the design of our garden spaces so they reflect and respect the past, speak to the present, and anticipate the future.

Use online and/or other resources, independently or with others, to research one or more of the questions below:
o How did the land our site sits on evolve geologically and ecologically?
o How did people impact the site over time?
o What are past and current demographics of communities surrounding our site?
o What regional activities, amenities or programs exist that might compete or complement our public garden? Organize findings of your research so they can provide input to the design process by telling the stories you uncover, e.g. summaries, tables, photos, narratives

TIMING/DURATION

Minimum 5 hours/month for 4 months; longer term volunteers welcome!

QUALIFICATIONS

Strong interest in the landscapes and people of the Northern Neck Basic research skillsStrong written and communication skills Ability to work independently Computer skills helpful

LOCATIONS

Research may be done virtually, at the garden site*, and/or at historic record sites depending upon research pursued.Regular check-in meetings to rotate between in-person (at gathering spots in the Irvington/Kilmarnock area) and virtual.

TRAINING/SUPPORT

Introduction to context research as it relates to design of public garden will be provided.  Access to the garden development team by email and phone for questions and concerns.A mix of in-person and virtual monthly check-in gatherings with research volunteers and the garden development team to share progress and ideas, and connect with others with shared interests.

BENEFITS

Commit those deep local research dives you love to a legacy—your findings will help ground River Roots in a true sense of place to benefit our environment and community. Meet others with similar or complementary interests. Help shape a brand-new public space. Make sure this new garden space remembers its past and reflects its present.

* NOTE ABOUT GARDEN SITE

The site to be developed as River Roots Discovery Gardens is in Lancaster County, VA, on 14 acres of land behind the under-construction Lancaster County Middle/High School on Irvington Road.

All are welcome to visit the site which is accessed via Old St John's Road, the northernmost entrance road to the Hills Quarter Community.  Turn onto Old St John's Road.  The site is on the left just beyond the pond behind the high school.  Park across Old St John's Road in the gravel parking lot by the small yellow building.

Volunteer: Transport Volunteers: Be the Ride

Transport Volunteer – Be the Bridge to a New Beginning

Every journey to a forever home starts with a ride — and that’s where you come in.

Transport Volunteers play a vital role in giving cats a second chance by driving them from our shelter to trusted non-kill rescue partners in Fredericksburg, Richmond, and Northern Virginia. These transfers place cats in more populated areas, greatly increasing their chances of being adopted into loving homes.

As a Transport Volunteer, you’re more than a driver — you’re the bridge between uncertainty and a fresh start.

What You’ll Do:

Safely transport cats to partner rescues Help expand their adoption opportunities Represent our mission with care and compassion

What You’ll Need:

Comfort driving at night when needed Ability to lift up to 20 pounds A valid driver’s license

You may use your own vehicle (mileage may qualify for a tax deduction), or drive Cat Cove’s four-door automatic sedan.

If you enjoy driving and want to make a tangible, life-saving impact in just a few hours, this rewarding volunteer opportunity could be the perfect fit. Every mile truly matters.
